Individual and Bespoke Riding Course
Individual and Bespoke Riding Course.
The course is suitable for riders from age 8 and above, there are 7 x 2-hour sessions that you can take at a frequency that suits you (we recommend a minimum of 1 session taken per week for progression)
The course is for those who are looking for rapid development in their riding, tailored around their current horse-riding level and goals. Finding a route to progression will mean something different to each person: for some riders their core strength needs support, for others an in-depth understanding of horse movement could be missing. Many riders want to improve their balance to enjoy canter work (instead of fearing it), and some might want to get off the lead rein and become more independent. As riders advance in their riding many want to revisit their foundations and effectiveness for greater accuracy in their transitions or core stability. Whatever your need for a detailed and focused training route, we can support you.
We understand that when we ride there can be many factors that hold us back from reaching our goals; fear and confidence can play a major role in how we hold ourselves back, as well as lack of partnerships with our horses at times.
To develop in the saddle knowledge of how horses are built, move, and access power to take us forward are essential. Your course will be designed by Johanna McDonald – a highly qualified British Horse Society (BHS) Senior Eventing Coach and proprietor of Rein & Shine Equestrian Centre. Johanna specialises in partnerships, and tailored rider development. Whether you are a beginner finding your balance or an experienced rider looking to refine your skills, Johanna will structure a progressive pathway. Her approach actively tracks your development after every single session and integrates top-tier technology like the centre’s advanced mechanical rider simulator to ensure you safely and rapidly reach your personal riding aspirations. Johanna will build your bespoke progressions course in a logical and progressive format for you to follow.
Session 1: Professional discussion with Johanna McDonald looking at your current objectives, then a ridden arena assessment on our school horses. Following this we will return to the classroom to analyse common themes between the riding and goal setting session to formulate a development plan for the remaining sessions. Johanna will discuss your plan with you, before our team book in the remaining sessions.
Sessions 2 to 7: These sessions will feature riding in every time – the type of riding will vary depending on the chosen pathway plan. We can utilise our Simulator, school horse flat sessions, pole work, hacking, and lunge sessions. We will also have a classroom session each time to develop and build the underpinning knowledge required to reach our goals and targets. This could be a mix of short lectures and practical sessions on horse movement, anatomy, refinement and application of rider aides, video analysis of your ridden sessions, rider biomechanics, riding for your body type, mindset approaches to fear, and steps of confidence building in the saddle. The riding content and classroom content will entirely depend on the findings from session 1, these are just examples of the expanse of resources we may call upon to support you.
Johanna McDonald will support you through session 1, and you will be matched with the right coaches for sessions 2 to 7. Johanna will also get involved in some elements of your practical lectures during the course.
